University of Malawi to Launch New Postgraduate Program in Music
The University of Malawi is set to make significant strides in the creative industry by recruiting its first postgraduate students for a new program in music, beginning in July 2025. This move follows a broader initiative earlier this year, where the university introduced six new arts degrees, including various disciplines within music.
The development has garnered enthusiastic support from the Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM). In a statement, MUM leader Vita Chirwa welcomed the initiative, describing it as “huge” for the music industry. He emphasized that the introduction of formal education opportunities is essential for artists to enhance their skills and advance their music techniques.
Chirwa noted, "This will help a lot in skills development. Artists need formal education to advance their music techniques." The collaboration between the University of Malawi and MUM signifies a commitment to nurturing talent within the creative sector, aiming to create a more robust framework for artists to thrive professionally.
As the creative industry continues to gain recognition, initiatives like these promise to provide valuable resources and educational pathways for aspiring musicians in Malawi.
