Celebrating Women's Artistry: Chiphadzuwa Exhibition Set to Wow

The Kaliso Art Gallery in Lilongwe is set to host the second edition of the Female Visual Artists Art Exhibition, dubbed Chiphadzuwa, on Saturday. The exhibition, which runs until March 30, 2025, coincides with International Women's Day, celebrated annually to promote women's equality and raise awareness about discrimination. Led by Kaliso Arts Gallery founder Evelyn Chisambiro, the exhibition features works by nine female visual artists, including Chisambiro herself.

The exhibition, titled Chiphadzuwa, which means "Beauty" in Chichewa, aims to showcase the artists' definition of beauty through their artworks. "Beauty is not only about appearance, but it's a lot of things," Chisambiro explained. "Chiphadzuwa is expressing what we have, and that will be seen through their amazing artworks." The pre-opening event on Friday will feature music performances by Chikondi Wiseman and Neo Metals, and will offer buyers a chance to purchase original artworks at a discount.

The exhibition is part of efforts to promote and support female visual artists in Malawi. Apart from Chisambiro, participating artists include Tee Mlinga, Vanessa Maganga, Louisa Kanchewa, Amabel Banda, Mable Tikhale Wasi, Faith Mzoma, Alinafe Chapungu, and Cindy Chilimampunga.

In a related development, celebrated fashion designer Lilly Alfonso is representing Malawi at the Creative Economy Week in Zimbabwe, organized by the British Council. The event aims to empower fashion designers and entrepreneurs to succeed, and features insights into the latest fashion trends and industry developments.
