CSOs Petition President Chakwera Over Exclusion of Nahec Funding in National Budget
Civil society organisations (CSOs) in the creative and heritage industries, including the National Arts and Heritage Council (Nahec) Taskforce, have petitioned President Lazarus Chakwera over the exclusion of Nahec funding in the 2025/26 National Budget. The petition, delivered to the Office of the President and Cabinet (OPC) in Lilongwe, calls for Chakwera's intervention to ensure the allocation of funds for Nahec's operationalisation.
Nahec Taskforce vice-chairperson Japher Mussa presented the petition to Principal Secretary for Administration in OPC Maxwell Tsitsi. The petition highlights the importance of Nahec's implementation, which is at risk due to the lack of financial commitment from the government. Since its enactment in September 2024, stakeholders have been waiting for the government to provide necessary funding.
The petition also expresses surprise that the Ministry of Finance has not followed through on President Chakwera's previous commitments to support the creative sector. Chakwera had expressed his support during the State of the Nation Address and engagements with the youth.
Nahec Taskforce chairperson Maxwell Chiphinga stated that efforts to engage the Ministry of Finance proved futile, prompting the petition. Chiphinga emphasized that the President's commitments should be respected by the responsible ministries.
CSOs are now urging President Chakwera to intervene and ensure that Nahec receives the necessary funding to promote arts and heritage in Malawi. The Director of Arts in the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Humphreys Mpondaminga, confirmed that they are waiting for a response from the Ministry of Finance regarding Nahec funding consideration.
The exclusion of Nahec funding in the national budget has raised concerns about the government's commitment to supporting the creative and heritage industries.
