Malawi Writers Union Launches Short Story Competition
The Malawi Writers Union (Mawu) has introduced a short story competition aimed at promoting reading and writing culture in the country. This development comes after the union announced its board of trustees, led by renowned writer Lawrence Kadzitche.
According to Mawu, the competition is open to all Malawian writers, both within the country and in the diaspora. The competition features two categories: one for secondary school students and another for all Malawian writers.
The theme of the competition is "Art and Mental Health," and the winner will receive a cash prize of K1 million. The second and third-place winners will receive K750,000 and K350,000, respectively.
In the secondary school category, the winner will receive K300,000, while the second and third-place winners will receive K200,000 and K100,000, respectively. The winning stories will be included in an anthology.
Mawu President Shadreck Chikoti emphasized that the competition aims to promote writing and reading, sparking conversations through the platform. Chikoti hinted that this is just the beginning of more initiatives to propel writing in Malawi and compete internationally.
