Nahec Taskforce Laments Lack of Funding in Proposed National Budget
The National Arts and Heritage Council (Nahec) taskforce has expressed disappointment over the absence of funding allocation in the 2025-26 proposed national budget. Despite lobbying for K3.78 billion, the taskforce's secretary, Ron Muphuwa, said they received no feedback from the Ministry of Finance.
Muphuwa emphasized that the funds were intended to establish Nahec, following the enactment of the National Arts and Heritage Act. The taskforce is now engaging with members of the Parliamentary Committee on Community and Social Services, who supported the Nahec Bill.
Unesco previously assisted the taskforce in lobbying for the bill's passage, but that support is no longer available. Muphuwa appealed for well-wishers to help their cause, highlighting the importance of Nahec in promoting Malawi's arts and heritage.
The Director of Arts in the Ministry of Local Government, Unity and Culture, Humphrey Mpondaminga, acknowledged the funding issue and expressed hope for a positive outcome from discussions with the Social and Community Affairs and Local authorities and Rural Development Cluster.
Special Adviser to President Lazarus Chakwera on Creative Industries, Q Malewezi, reassured that the President remains committed to operationalizing Nahec as soon as possible.
The Nahec taskforce's concerns underscore the need for sustained support to establish a robust arts and heritage council in Malawi.
