YDC Calls for Investment in Theatre for Children and Young People

As the world celebrates World Theatre for Children and Young People, Blantyre-based youthful theatre group YDC has called upon policymakers to invest in theatre for children and young people. The group believes that investing in theatre will help young people achieve their dreams.

YDC's remarks were made by actor and playwright Fumbani Phiri, who emphasized the importance of theatre in nurturing creativity and promoting social transformation. Phiri noted that theatre is not just a form of entertainment but also a powerful tool for shaping young minds and fostering empathy.

Phiri urged policymakers to fund youth-led initiatives and recognize the arts as a vital tool for social transformation. He believes that this will help build a society that values its young artists and fosters innovation, inclusion, and development.

The celebration of World Theatre for Children and Young People is an initiative led by the International Association of Theatre for Children and Young People (Assitej). The purpose of the celebration is to promote the phrase "take a child to the theatre, today."

YDC has announced plans to bring back the Udolo Wanga Youth Festival this year, which will be held in August and September. The festival aims to provide a platform for young people to showcase their talents and express themselves through theatre and art.

National Theatre Association of Malawi (Ntam) President Maxwell Chiphinga, also known as Max DC, emphasized the need to encourage children and young people to utilize their talents.
